The land that Sudbury currently occupies was first settled as part of Sudbury Plantation in 1639. It was later incorporated in 1780 as East Sudbury on land that had once been part of the neighboring community of Sudbury. It was later renamed as Wayland in 1835 in honor of Dr. Francis Wayland, former president of Brown University. Dr. Wayland was a benefactor of the town’s historic library, the first free public library in all of Massachusetts.
